Gansu and Qinghai, China Earthquake
On December 18, 2023, a 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck Jishishan County in northwest China's Gansu Province, near the border with Qinghai Province, resulting in at least 131 fatalities, and nearly 1000 injuries. Over 150,000 homes are reported to be destroyed or damaged, with local temperatures plummeting to -16°C, complicating rescue efforts. Numerous organizations, including the Chinese government, NGOs, and international bodies, are mobilizing aid. There is a significant number of displacements, and with ongoing aftershocks, there is a risk of further damage and casualties.
